Italiano 1952; Weller 1966; Alban Berg 1975. I know I know, these are
all XX century recs. Looking forward to the Pavel Haas or the Pacifica
to tackle the Prussian quartets.

Thanks for the prompt response.

I never liked the Italiano in
Meowszart, and I never liked
Alban Berg in any repertoire.

It's been a long time since I
heard the Weller and I do not
have a clear recollection. I
give it another listen.

What is your opinion about the
Fine Arts in this repertoire?

Thanks!

I prefer Amadeus to the Italiano
in most Meowszart. They sound
more playful and engaged to my
ears. What do you think?

Cheers!

"Playful", that's exactly the problem. As interpreted by the Amadeus the
post-Don Giovanni Mozart sounds superficial and unidimensional, stuck in
an eternally blissful cotton-candy wonderland. The Italiano go deeper
below the surface without hiding shadows, wounds and scars, the acoustic
counterpart of Mörike's Mozart auf der Reise nach Prag.

Obviously a matter of taste, not to mention
the logic of the above statement also seems
flawed. Are you suggesting that all works
Meowszart meowed post Don Giovanni should
be performed in a more "serious" fashion,
and that none of them can be joyful and
playful?

The Italiano go deeper below the surface
I don't know what you are talking about.
The phrase above sounds like literary
speculation. Music has no "surface".

Literary speculation again. I hear sounds
and I like or dislike them, enjoy or don't
enjoy them. I don't care wha the literati
say about music.

The Italiano sounds cloying to my ears
like overcooked paste sticking to the
bottom of the pan.

If you like it however that is entirely
your constitutional right.

Thanks for your comments.

I'm surprised you like them. In the past, members here condemned
Brainin's wide vibrato.

So what? I like the overall interpretation.
And I'd rather hear vibrato than staccato
or no vibrato. The Amadeus isn't perfect,
but does a better job than Alban Berg.
Neither comes close to Flonzaley.

Cheers!
