Audiograbber vs EAC vs CDEX

I found a very scratched CDr under the seat in my car. The car player
would not read it. My home cd player could not read it. My dvd rom
could not read it. My DVD writer can. I tried EAC. It tried to rip
the cds but with all its error checking it found many read and sync
errors. It probably would have taken 12 hours to finish. CDEX crapped
out on the first jitter error.

Audigrabber ripped through it like a 20HP motor through a piece of
brass.I am now enjoying this once lost CD.

I don't know. Maybe the errors EAC and CDEX repair are too slight to
be heard by the human ear. 44000 samples is a lot for one second.

The moral of the story. EAC is great. Sometimes it is more of a curse
than a remedy. Have all three of these free programs handy and don't
give up. One of them may work. You may have to do it with EAC
overnight. You may get lucky like me. Maybe audiograbber is written
with some knowledge that nobody else has

I'll definitely try this on the next problem disc that comes my way,
but I've also had luck in similar situations by using EAC's less-strict
settings. They're under "EAC Options / Extraction" and "Drive Options /
Extraction Method". (They're a bit confusing, though, which is why
Audiograbber sounds like a valuable item.)

I had a disc recently which EAC gave up on 30 seconds from the end.
Irritating.

So I remembered a tip I got on a local newsgroup a long time ago:
Apply a liberal amount of toothpaste on the problem spots, wait a
short time, and then remove most of it with a piece of wet, soft
paper. So I did, and EAC ripped the final movement of The Planets
without needing a single retry.

No warranty attached :-)

Toothpaste is too abrasive. I'd use Novus Plastic Polish 2 if I had to
burnish a CD.

There are few, if any, signficantly abrasive toothpastes on the market.
(Pepsodent was one.) The toothpaste has the effect of filling in scratches,
rather than removing them.
