I have a first generation CD player from 1983, a Philips with the Magnavox
name on it. The model is FD 1000SL. In Europe I think this was the Philips
CD100.

Well, it hasn't run in years. Does anybody know if you can still get parts
for this anymore?

Worth it?

Have someone take a look at it, if you don't know what you're doing.
Sounds like you haven't opened it. Simple soldering job?
Interchangeable parts?

Some CD100 talk...

This unit ran for about 10 years. It does turn on. Just wont read a disc.
Perhaps it needs a new laser?

As far it being worth fixing? I saw the Philips version in a museum in York.
I think this (along with a Sony unit) were historically the first ever
commercial CD players. First reviews gave this one the nod. Here's an image:

Have you tried cleaning the laser's lens?
Perhaps the laser got stuck.

I also have this same unit and used it almost daily for 15+ years until I
finally replaced it last year with a Quad. Mine is also the Magnavox model
and it still works but the motor (or something) is beginning to make some
noise. It's a beautiful instrument.

If you want it working for sentimental/nostalgia reasons, I'd go ahead.
Otherwise not.

I assume it loads the disc OK?

If so, what you want to do is identify the laser unit, aka the transport
mechanism. I don't know which one was used here, but historically there
have only been two makers of transport mechanisms, Sony and Philips, and
neither has made many (types).

Get the cover off and see what there is in the way of markings around
the laser area.

Ubiquitous throughout the '90s and maybe earlier was the Philips CDM
12.1, replaceable with the current-production VAM 1202. You can pick up
a new 1202 for c. $20 or less. (1201 also an option, 1202 probably what
you'll find.)

If yours is not compatible with the 1202, there's a good chance you can
pick up a used player cheaply that has whatever transport yours uses,
and pull from that.

Philips/Magnavox/Marantz and who knows what else would be candidates.

SE.

I also still have a very early Magnavox CD Player, the Model FD3030, and it
still works perfectly.

Does anyone else still remember this model?
