Bruno Walter Conducts Beethoven [limited edition]
Cat. no.SICC-10286
Release date: November 13, 2019 (or, the day before on the other side of Int’l Date Line)
Japanese original release. Consists of 7 SACD hybrid discs and 2 CDs. Features new mixing and remastering, derived from the original 3-track master tapes.

Not sure what the two CDs are. My guess is rehearsals from the Ninth and...what’s the other one?

That clears it up.

Domo!

What does the group think of Walter's Indian summer Beethoven Symphonies? Recorded at Hollywood Legion Post 43, 2035 N. Highland Av. I've been inside and imagined what it was like in 1959. Pretty cool building, and historic. Post 43 holds some prime real estate in Hollywood near Vine Street. They're pretty set, as central Hollywood is in the midst of a renaissance.

-----------------

For me, Walter's set as above, is the most essential, the only set most classically rounded, with warmth and fire, that makes all the additional efforts by others, virtually inessential. Fwiw.

For me the later cycle is nothing compared to the mono NY cycle. When a conductor can make a statement with the funeral march, you know you are listening to something special, and that's the NY one. BTW, Tennstedt NDR also comes to mind as a performance of rare eloquence where that movement is concerned. And I say that not as an obsessive, but as someone jaded to the movement. But greatness shakes off cobwebs convincingly.
