Mingus yes, but not thus album. Give me Tijuana Moods, The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady and Mingus Ah Um with the wonderful Horace Parlan. I once had the honour of doing a tour of Denmark on bass with Horace. What a lovely guy and a unique pianist.

I like Mingus Ah-Um, but Blues n' Roots is my favourite. I never was totally wowed by Black Saint and Sinner Lady.

Blue n' Roots has a very heavy fervour and raw primal feeling about it, along with some luscious deep sounds, and much the same players were used on Mingus Ah-Um.

Fwiw.

Yes...I also like this pianist very much, well forgotten nowadays...
Difficult for a novice to realize that he was handicapped of the right
hand, and thus predominantly of the left hand (intervals of third and
seventh)...Very constructed improvisations...

The most extraordinary "Fables of Fabius" that I know.
The *genius* in its raw state....

For Fables this is the one - the one with the actual lyrics. And what lyrics!! Just as relevant today as it was then.

Blues and Roots is my favorite Mingus album. Listen to 'Tensions' with its crazy bass solo; swings like hell.
