Salammbô was Mussorgsky’s first serious attempt at writing an opera. This is a recording of the first performance of the incomplete opera based on the performing edition by Zoltán Peskó. (The performance was an unstaged concert performance.) The reliable seeming Wikipedia article on Salammbô indicates that Mussorgsky left six scenes, only two of which were orchestrated by the composer. The Peskó recording includes 12 tracks. I’m not sure how to reconcile Peskó’s twelve tracks and Wikipedia’s six scenes. Two movements were completed and orchestrated by the composer. The remaining excerpts were orchestrated by Peskó.
