Claudio Abbado was only seven when a seminal event took
place that brought with it a moment of magical awakening he
still recalls as if it were only yesterday. On the
programme at a concert he attended at La Scala, Milan, was
Debussy's cycle for orchestra NOCTURNES under the direction
of Antonio Guarnieri. In the second movement, "Fetes", he
suddenly became aware of an evocative march that seemed to
come from afar, its trumpet sonorities gradually approaching
from a remote and mysteriously hushed world and slowly
assuming tangible form before disappearing and dissolving
into silence no less imperceptibly than when they had
arrived. Even today, Abbado still describes this as an
unforgettable, magical moment: "From the outset I've been
inspired by the idea of recreating this magic."

-- from the booklet for Abbado The Symphony Edition (2013)

(there is no Debussy in this collection)
