Discussion:
Rubenstein performing Rudepoema?

I discovered Villa-Lobos' Rudepoema several months ago (from Hamelin's
Hyperion CD), and instantly fell in love with it. I picked up another
recording of it by Sonia Rubinsky on Daghlian recently, and while
reading the liner notes just now I was reminded of a question. The
notes mention that the piece was dedicated to Arthur Rubenstein, "who
performed the piece often". Are there any recordings of Rubenstein
playing it?

On a related note, has Szidon's (apparently amazing) recording of
Rudepoema been released on CD? Apparently, the DG LP 2530 634 has it,
but I only have a CD player right now. I've pondered picking up the LP
for the day when I get a record player, but that won't happen for a
while.

Not that I'm aware; this is another treasure imprisoned behind the vinyl
curtain.

I've always liked Rudepoema too. The first recording I heard of it
was on an RCA Victrola LP with a pianist named David Bean (in the late
60s or 70s). I'm not sure, but there might be a recording by Nelson
Friere.

The same David Bean who also recorded some Busoni elegies for the same label,
I believe; these are also trapped behind that hateful vinyl curtain.

And hopefully they will remain there.

Yes, the Busoni was coupled with the Villa Lobos on that LP. I also
remember that the vinyl for that release was very thin and soft (due
perhaps to a period of petroleum shortages).

In the meantime, you can get Nelson Freire's great recording of the
work on an inexpensive Apex CD.

Thanks (to you, and to the other posters) for the advice! I assume that
this is the CD version of Teldec 8.43686 ZK that Tom Deacon cited. I'll
keep an eye out for this one, and I won't keep my hopes up for Szidon or
Rubenstein.

No.

But you might also try to find the version by Nelson Freire on Teldec

For those who appreciate Villa Lobos this is an absolute must-have.

No official recordings. In 1940 the NBC broadcasted the work performed
live by Rubinstein, and recording of the broadcast exists among
collectors. The recording of the work is unfortunately incomplete, as
the broadcast was interrupted an Rubinstein's playing was faded out
before he finished it.
